Product Description Scholastic s award-winning reading program is now available to pre-readers with the creation of My First Bob BooksTM. Expanding upon the Bob Books method and philosophy, these brand new sets offer children and their parents simple and satisfying tools that lay an important foundation for reading readiness. My First Bob Books:Alphabet helps children match sounds to letters, letters to words, and words to a story through the introduction of uppercase and lowercase letters and initial letter sounds. My First Bob Books:Pre-Reading Skills uses humorous read-aloud stories to introduce spatial, relational and sequencing concepts that kids need in preparation for reading.

Pre-Pre-Pre Reading Books November 7, 2008 2 out of 2 found this review helpful
I got these books for my 3-year-old as an introduction to Bob books. His older sister reads the 'real' Bob books, and I thought that he would like to be a 'big kid' with his own Bob books. The good news is that he does like them. We have read each one several times, and he knows the stories and the developmental lessons that he was supposed to cull from the stories.
My disappointment with the books stems from my lack of understanding of their content. I thought that they were going to introduce very early phonetic concepts, or something similar. Instead, they do not teach anything about reading, per se. Instead, they teach pre-reading skills -- shape identification (circle, triangle, and square), sequencing (what came first, second, and third), and patterns (circle, square, circle, etc.). These are all very important skills, and they are undoubtedly necessary skills for a reader to possess. That being said, it is a stretch to describe these books as pre-readers. These books would probably be better suited to a 2-year-old or a young 3-year-old.

My 5yr old is reading the BOB book sets. He loves them and he is reading very well. My 3yr old was not really interested in watching his brother read. I ordered the Pre-Reading set for my younger son and now he is very excited. He likes having his own books and he is learning shapes, patterns, and sequences while learning to follow a story. He looks forward to reading 'his' books. The characters are younger siblings to the characters in the original BOB book sets. I think this is a good leading in to the older set.
