The Moon Shines Down

by Margaret Wise Brown

Illustrated by Linda Bleck

Forgotten for decades in a dusty, tucked-away trunk, The Moon Shines Down brings to life once more the unmistakable voice of Margaret Wise Brown. This soon-to-be classic allows a whole new generation of children to discover, cherish, and enjoy the artistry of this beloved author.

Never before published, The Moon Shines Down on children all over the world from right next door to across the sea, from where "a Dutch boy dreams" and "cowbells ring" to "across the sea in the Far, Far East", through the familiar prayer:

I see the Moon

And the Moon sees me.

God bless the Moon,

And God bless me.

Margaret Wise Brown (1910-1952) was a pioneer of children's literature, choosing to write the stories that children wanted to hear-rather than those that grown-ups wanted to tell. She is best known for her now classic Good Night Moon and Runaway Bunny, which remain among the world's best-selling children's books.

Margaret was a prolific writer, and, at the peak of her career, she had over 100 books in print. Her untimely death left numerous manuscripts and ideas behind in various stages of completion. After a time, these were tucked away in a cedar trunk and largely forgotten. It is from this forgotten trunk that The Moon Shines Down was rescued.

Illustrator Linda Bleck began her artistic career as a child, drawing on rolls of old blueprint paper supplied by her architect father. Later, she helped her mother, a freelance illustrator for Hallmark, paint in the details of her intricate drawings. Linda's work has appeared in The NewYorker, Time Magazine, and the Wall Street Journal. She is also the writer and illustrator of the "Pepper the Dog" series, which won the National Parenting Publication Award.

Linda and her family now live in southern Wisconsin . . . where the moon shines down on them, one and all.

The Story Behind the Lost Manuscript . . .

The Moon Shines Down

from MARGARET WISE BROWN,

the Author of Goodnight Moon

The Moon Shines Down is being published for the first time 56 years after the death of the beloved children's author Margaret Wise Brown.

Amazingly, this unpublished manuscript lay incomplete and forgotten in a cedar trunk in a Vermont barn. When it was discovered, the onionskin paper had yellowed and the paperclips that held the pages together had rusted. Children's book publisher, Laura Minchew, a longtime fan of Brown, took on the challenge to complete the work.

Based on the New England Sampler prayer, "God Bless the Moon and God Bless Me," this soon-to-be bedtime classic is a prayer for God's blessing on all the world's children.

5 out of 5 stars Great, Christian book our daughter loves   December 1, 2008
This book focuses on different cultures around the world, including the East, South America, Australia and Europe. The story revolves around the moon shining down on all of us around the world, and how we are all joined together.

The thing that I hadn't realized earlier was the deep focus on God, and more specifically Christianity. There is even a page dedicated to Christ's birth and Christmas.

While this was great for us and our four year old daughter loved seeing the baby Christ in the manger, it is important to know for people who may not share that faith. I was surprised since I didn't see a similar theme in Goodnight Moon.

The art is beautiful, the pages feel very sturdy, more so than most of our other kids books.

I'd definitely recommend this book to anyone with young kids. Our four year old daughter has asked for the book a few times since we got it. While not her favorite, it is definitely one she still thinks about and asks for,

5 out of 5 stars A great children's book.   November 30, 2008
By the author of Goodnight Moon comes a story that will delight children all over the world. The partial manuscript for this book was found fifty-six years after Margaret Wise Brown's death and children's book publisher Laura Minchew was chosen to complete the book in Brown's unique style.

A little koala travels the sea at night with the moon shining down on him. As he visits Switzerland, the Far East, Mexico, France, The Outback Wild, An English Wood, Africa and The Oceans Deep the moon shines down over the people and animals and the koala says a little prayer to bless them all.

The book is full of beautifully drawn and colored illustrations. The lands the koala visits are captured so accurately that you can almost guess where he's visiting even if you hadn't read it.

The book is geared for children ages 4-8 however I think that children of all ages will love this book. I recommend this one with 2 thumbs up.

5 out of 5 stars Absolutely Beautiful Children's Book!   November 30, 2008
We love this book. While the rhyme is not quite perfect in this book, the story content, and the beautiful illustrations more than compensate for what is missing for a 5 Star Review.

The true test of how good a children's book is the kids reaction. They are not so concerned with correct English or perfectly rhymes. What impresses little kids is the pictures and this book is great! My grandson asked several questions every time we turned the page. ...."Who is that?", "What does a platypus do?", "What is a warthog?", "There's the mommy & daddy, where is the baby & little boy?",.... just to mention a few. If it stimulates their minds to ask questions and learn new things, it is great!

Through the pages of "The Moon Shines Down" your young child will be led on a journey around the world. They will see places, children, and animals from many different countries. They will learn that the same moon shines on all of us, that there are many different kinds of people and many beautiful places in this world.

This book would make a great addition to any children's book collection.

4 out of 5 stars God bless the moon   November 30, 2008
The Moon Shines Down is a beautifully illustrated children's book about one of my son's favorite things right now...the moon. Margaret Wise Brown, the author of Goodnight Moon, is the main author of this book. The manuscript for this book was found 56 years after Brown had passed away. It was found decaying in an old trunk, incomplete. Laura Minchew, children's book publisher, took on the task of finishing the story, matching Margaret Brown's style.
Goodnight moon is one of my two year old son's favorite books so I was excited to read this with him. Even though The Moon Shines Down is much longer, it captivated my son's attention. The illustrations are beautiful. And I love the multicultural theme of the story, I appreciate how it expands my son's horizons and helps him to realize that there is a bigger world out there than North America.
I think the biggest downfall of The Moon Shines Down is the inconsistency of the story topics and even the rhymes. For example, the story goes from addressing different countries at night to the far, far east during the day, it seems strange that every other place "visited" was nighttime except that one. Also, the author visits Christmas, which I find strange because it's the only non-place. The wording is occasionally awkward as well with rhymes that don't work...especially in the Mexico pages. I would be interested to see which words are from Margaret Wise Brown's original manuscript.
My son loves the book and frequently asks for it and I enjoy reading it to him as well as the backstory...so all in all, it's a hit.

4 out of 5 stars A Bedtime Classic for Today's Children   November 30, 2008
A never before published children's book, "The Moon Shines Down" by Margaret Wise Brown and illustrated by Linda Bleck arrived in my mail yesterday. I felt like a child with an unexpected Christmas gift when I gazed at the bright yellow moon over a Koala bear sailing down a river. I quit my tasks and read the book aloud.

It's been awhile since I read Margaret Wise Brown's books, but from the first rhythmic line, I recalled all the days with our children and grandchildren. Books like "Good Night Moon" and "Runaway Bunny." Brown had over a 100 books in print when she died suddenly in 1952. Her many unfinished manuscripts were all but lost.

"The Moon Shines Down" is a delightful story of how the same moon shines upon children everywhere and in every culture. I see this as a valuable book for teaching young children about race, animals, and God. The bright colors on each page will keep the youngest child entranced in the story.

"The Moon Shines Down" is a treasure from the front cover to the last page where a Koala bear sleeps in a tree. The publisher's introduction about the "story behind the lost manuscript" creates a teaching tool. A bit of history to help instruct our children on how old things are valuable and usable.

Thanks to the far reaching insight of Thomas Nelson--what a brilliant idea to seek the help of author Laura Minchew when the old sheets of forgotten words were found. I applaud Minchew for giving us Margaret Wise Brown once more. "The Moon Shines Down" promises to be a classic for children today.
