Awful text.. the cute "packaging" is not enough to overcome November 7, 2008 It is telling to me that this book has an illustrator credited, but no author. No author would want to take "credit" for the unimaginative and generally lousy text upon which this book is based. Clearly some hack at the publishing company created or found a crummy Thanksgiving poem, thought of packaging it in Turkey shape the adorable little sparkly tail feathers that makes it a visually attractive gift and asked Sabrina Yoon to do admittedly cute and colorful drawings to go along with it.
But it's not enough to justify buying this book. First off all, books that are "five little..." books are essentially number books. They are showing kids to recognize numbers/numerals and count down from 5. But this book completely ignores that function. There are no numerals even written anywhere in the book (that is, 5,4,3,2,1).. just written out as words. And even that isn't featured in any way -- they are just in the same basic font as the rest of the poem (you can see the first page of it in the search inside this book feature if you want to look).
Then, the poem is just awful! You know the structure of a "five little" poem..so let me give you the variables....
5 - dancing on the floor/one twirls away 4 - chased by a bee/one gets stung 3 - enjoying the view/one falls asleep 2 - getting some sun/one gets burnt (which is a picture of a turkey *roasting* on the beach! 1 - looking for some fun/Happy Thanksgiving yelled everyone
The dancing and the view ones are fairly cute, but seriously -- stung by a bee!!! They couldn't come up with anything better to rhyme with three than stung by a bee??? And the sunburn one is just too stupid for any explanation.
Ugh... pass this by and despite the cute little feathers, pick either a different Thanksgiving book or a different "crinkly" book. I'd try Thanksgiving Is for Giving Thanks and Lamaze Fly-Away Ladybug and for a counting book, tryTen Little Ladybugs.
SOO cute November 2, 2008 My daughter got this and not only is it a cute story but its "fashionable", she says. Its got textures, its colorful and its durable!
Awesome Turkey book January 31, 2008 I bought this for my daughter's first Thanksgiving. She loved it. The feathers are great for her to pull and chew on. This story is a cute, fun little ditty.
Adorable November 17, 2007 What a sweet little counting book for Thanksgiving! The fabric tail feathers make it a "must touch" book for children.
Not just for Thanksgiving? June 27, 2007 3 out of 3 found this review helpful
I bought this book on sale and planned to save it for Thanksgiving. My five month old son loved it so it is one we read a lot now. This board book has five "feathers" that make that crinkle sound babies love. I didn't give it five stars because ideally it would have a better coating around the feathers to protect it a little more from all the chewing it is forced to endure.
