Read, read, read December 2, 2008 I purchased this book many years ago for my oldest daughter who is now 37. When I asked if my grandson had this book, she said no, but then began to recite verses she remembered from the book. She was so excited to know the book was being sent to my grandson. They enjoy reading together in the evenings. It's a fun book, easy to read. One your child will remember for years to come. There Was an Old Lady Who Swallowed a Fly (Caldecott Honor Book)
An old folk poem October 27, 2008 I remember hearing this poem long ago and was surprised to find it in book form.
This is a fun little book. It has a nice little rhyme story about an old lady who eats a fly then goes about eating other creatures to get the previous creature.
In the end you have a valuable moral! Never swallow a horse!
The artwork makes the book fun. The goofy expressions of the old lady and the page cut out design which allows readers to see what she has in her stomach.
About the only thing to be wary is the question of death. There is the repeated phrase "Perhaps she'll die" and in the end the old lady dies. If your child doesn't understand death, you might might avoid or have the explanation ready for the question.
Overall it's a fun book and I had to read it a few times for my daughter.
What a HOOT!! October 25, 2008 2 out of 2 found this review helpful
I remember this poem in song form from my childhood. I hadn't thought of it in years, until my grandson told me his teacher had read it to him in his pre-k class. I was delighted to find this book on Amazon.com. I was thrilled to see it's large size, bright colors, crazy pictures, the old lady's stomach expanding to accomodate each new animal. I wasn't bothered (as a child) by the phrase "perhaps she'll die," but I imagine my grandson will enjoy some of the "asides" that rhyme with "die." This book will be a gift to my grandson for his fourth birthday in a few days. I am looking forward to reading it to him! Or should I say, singing it to him!!
disappointed October 2, 2008 I don't remember if there were size dimensions given for this book, but I expected it to be twice the size. I have other books from this author and publisher and they are nice and big and easy for me to use in class. This book is really too small for me to read to my class. I am sadly disappointed.
Love this book September 30, 2008 Loved this book as a kid - so had to buy it for my baby.
