Great for travel July 30, 2010 jj with kids Used this to go from San Diego to Boston and back with a 17 month old and 2 month old baby, which we will make that trip twice a year. With all the bags and two kids, this was so handy to not have to carry a large car seat and a 17 month old and baby and push bags. We were able to keep it attached through all airport scanners but did remove it when we attached the car seat on the plane. Incredibly easy to use, attach and remove with the quick release buckle. A bit pricey, but traveling with kids, a $100 for some sort of sanity is well worth it.
Essential for traveling with small children July 26, 2010 abbie'smom Worth the money plus more! This was easy to use, and saved us so much time in the airport between terminals. This wasn't difficult to put together and very sturdy. Make sure to ask for a seatbelt extender, which makes unbuckling a snap.
Travelmate Cart July 24, 2010 M. E. Vanleer (Atlanta, GA) This a wonderful cart. It made traveling through the airport a snap. When the baby was not riding in it he enjoyed pushing it. It is very easy to get the car seat off at the screening station. The car seat & the cart would not fit through the x-ray machine together, but it only takes a couple of seconds to remove. It takes about a few seconds to put it back on & your own your way. Get familar with how it goes on and off, this will make the experience very simple.
Fantastic invention July 14, 2010 L. Canitz (Colorado, USA) I bought the Go Go Kidz Travelmate three months before our family vacation to Hawaii to test it and see if it was worth buying two (we have to bring a car seat for each child).
The last time I traveled alone with one daughter (the other I was five months pregnant with) I used a rolling bag for her car seat. It was nice, but I had to also bring a small stroller to push her in around the airport. When I got one the plane to install her car seat in her seat, I had to remove a car seat that barely fit inside the bag and reinstall the headrest then install it in the airline seat. I was glad I had a direct flight. Plus I got a lot of strange looks. I must have looked bada**ed carrying a carseat on my back, had a laptop bag and diaper bag across my shoulder, pushing an umbrella stroller looking obviously pregnant.
This time, there is no direct flight. We are flying into THREE busy airports (Denver, LA, and Hawaii). Also, we already had one stroller mutilated by an airline with a "we don't cover strollers" excuse so that xnay'd flying with a stroller. I ordered this a few months in advance to make sure that it would fit our car seat, First Years True Fit Convertible. Both of our daughter have the exact same car seat.
I did read the instructions thoroughly before starting. Ours came with the ratcheting belt, btw. I recommend a power drill with philips head attachment for the handle screws. The holes do not line up perfectly. Also, for my car seat I did not need to adjust the metal brackets for the ratcheting belt. I followed the direction to lay down the car seat and put this on the back. Because of the rails of the car seat I had to use my knee to keep it in place until I could tighten it. Tighten that belt good, it is what is holding the car seat in place. I fed the belt through the front facing latch belt compartment. DO NOT make my mistake and loosen the belt all of the way. The teeth of the belt should only have 4 or 5 at the end. This will make it really tight. Also I connected the tether of the car seat to the grab handle (not the pull bar) to give it extra stability.
Pros:
Very sturdy if installation is followed
Has durable roller-blade-type wheels
NEW ratcheting belt makes it extremely easy to install and uninstall. I could do it in under a few minutes after some practice.
Adjustable handle for us with spouses that have a good 6" on us.
Cons:
Has no flip down bottom base to hold the car seat a little more secure
Ratchet belt takes some playing with the get the hang of it
Handle doesn't collapse all of the way behind it.
Overall I will be buying a second one to use with our other daughter. The added cost to buy another backpack type bag ($30) and the cost of our double stroller ($200) and to check the stroller ($30) we are actually saving money buying two of these at $160 total and don't have to worry about our expensive stroller getting damaged.
Helpful to get through airport but not perfect July 7, 2010 TAV (Maryland) I used the travelmate for the first time when I was seven months pregnant and traveling alone with my two year old. It was also the first time that my two year old was traveling with his car seat. I'm glad I got it, but I still think bringing the car seat feels like a hassle. When I went through security, the security person asked me to take the car seat off completely from the travelmate. I know other people said they were able to ask the person to hand wand the seat with it attached to it, but I didn't argue. I was able to take it off and on okay (thanks to alot of practice at home. I'm not someone that mechanical things come easily so when other reviewers said everything was such a cinch---I wouldn't agree. Now, I can do it pretty easily having done it several times, but it was definitely frustrating for me at first).
Once I got on the airplane, the aisle wasn't wide enough to roll it through. So, either I carried it down the aisle, or a stewardess felt pity on me and helped me. Navigating my toddler while carrying it down the aisle was not an easy task, since I no longer had hands free to hold his hand.
I decided to keep the seat attached to the travelmate when I strapped him in the seat because I didn't know how I could get the travelmate back on in the airplane, if I took it off. The problem with this is that my toddler barely had any room between his feet and the seat in front of him. In fact, I think if he grows several inches by next trip, it might not be possible to keep it attached just for comfort reasons. I definitely recommend asking a stewardess for a seatbelt extendor. Didn't use it for the trip there, and I was able to undo the latch, but it was very difficult. Much easier on the trip back with the extendor.
On the trip back, I had to take it off and on several times because I either hadn't tightened it enough or didn't strap it on in the right spot and it wasn't steady. As for as my toddler sitting on it, he's beyond using a stroller now and wants to walk everywhere, so having him being able to sit in his seat while rolling it through was not helpful for us.
So, nice to have the car seat on wheels, but it's still a hassle. If the security machines were all big enough for it to go through (the airport on the way back, I was able to stick the whole thing through, still attached through the x-ray machine) and if the airplane aisles were wider, it'd make a huge difference. Since that's not likely to change, it's still a hassle, but not as big of a hassle as lugging the car seat without it.
