Everyone agrees: dirty diapers stink. If parents could, they'd probably call in a genie to magic away all evidence of those poopy dipes. But for those who have not found an enchanted lamp lately, the new and improved Diaper Genie is a pretty good alternative. The basic idea is that you drop the used diaper into the bin, give the lid a few twists, and voila! The offensive item has been sealed away into a scented plastic liner. When the bin is full, open the base of the Genie and dump the sausaged, wrapped diapers into the garbage. No odor, no germs, no fuss! The newly designed version features more convenient one-handed operation and a built-in cutting system (with safety latch to keep little fingers out) for easy and quick disposal. Inserting the refills has also been made easier--just remove the old refill, plop in the new one, and tie a knot. Includes one Stage 1 refill (for breast- or formula-fed babies only).  More of a pain than a help! November 21, 2008
This takes two hands, expensive refills, and it still allows the smell. Not worth it at all. We went to a regular trash can that we empty in the evening! So much easier!!!

I purchased the diaper genie based on previous experience with my mom using it with my much younger siblings. And my baby boy is almost 1 month old and we have had to empty it twice and we're still using the refill that came with it. What i love about it is how easy it is to use it. It does open with one hand, don't listen to the other reviews they just aren't using it right. There is a small notch, about the size of a nickel under the button that opens it, it's there for you to slide your finger under and use your thumb to press on the button, and WOW...it opens with one hand :) Yah it does make a crinkling noise when putting the diaper in and a cranking noise when turning the dial on top, but that doesn't bother me cause i don't want my baby to need complete silence to sleep, i think it's better they get used to loud noise's now and learn to sleep through them. Also it's really easy to empty, just use one hand to push the cutting button and the other to turn the dial, open the bottom and you have a nice strand of diapers tightly wound ready for the trash. Also we haven't had any problems with smell,and it's currently in our bedroom next to the pack n play. Definetly worth it, just don't buy it here, we got it locally for $25.

I purchased this product but after about a week of use I realized it just wasn't for me. It seemed like a waste of money when I could just walk the diapers out to the trash and save the hassel of the diaper genie. I ended up selling it to a neighbor for half the price that I paid but at least I didn't waste tons more purchasing all of those refills. :)
Don't waste your money July 29, 2008
I bought the diaper genie for my twins and used it for 3 months. My biggest complaint is, that it is hard to open (you often need two hands) and it is incredibly loud. You have to shove the diaper down and the bags really crinkle loudly, then you close the lid, which is heavy and if you are not careful will slam down. Then you turn the dial, which makes loud clicking sounds. My babies startle every single time. I just purchased the Decor plus diaper pail - so much better. It uses a similar cartridge system for the bags AND you can get them biodegradable now, so if you are using biodegradable diapers it makes all the more sense. Plus, once you are done with diapers, you can use this as a regular trash can, whereas the genie becomes useless.

A friend gave us a Diaper Genie and a pack of bags before our first baby was born. We had a hard time just figuring out how to get the bags in it properly, and a few test-uses convinced us that this was a piece of useless junk. We gave it away before the baby came, and bought a Diaper Champ instead. The Champ is far and away easier to use, and you can use any trash bag in it--you aren't required to buy Playtex's bag system. If I could've given the Diaper Genie zero stars, I would have.
