Product Description Medela Nipple Shields, worn over the nipple and areola, have a special design that allows an uninterrupted flow of breast milk, while providing a larger surface for the baby to latch on to. Available in two sizes, Nipple Shields offer maximum comfort for mothers whose doctors recommend use of a nipple shield to help with latch-on difficulties. The Contact Nipple Shield also offers an open section that allows baby to stay in touch with mother's familiar smell. Medela Nipple Shields are individually packed toensure sterility. Because Nipple Shields may diminish the stimulation needed to sustain lactation, they should be used only with the supervision of a professional.

A must for new moms August 5, 2008 1 out of 1 found this review helpful
I love this product. It is so great for anyone with inverted nipples or "problem nipples" who is trying to breast feed. Without this my daughter would be formula-fed only. You just turn it inside out, place over the nipple, and pull the edges out. It suctions onto your nipple and you are now able to nurse the baby! Not only is it easy to use (after some practicing) once you get the hang of it, but it is easy to take with you. It has lasted 9 weeks so far with 8 or more feedings a day. It cleans up well and is very transportable. I never leave home without it!
Life-saver product! July 19, 2008 1 out of 1 found this review helpful
My lactation consultant suggests me against this product as she thinks I can never rely on its assistantship for ever. I took her adivce and started breastfeeding right after the emergency C-section,when I had only limited colostrum supply.Disappointedly,I got terrible nipple soreness from both baby's biting and nipple engorgement.I then swtiched to pumping but it still hurt. This prodcut came as my last straw.Fortunatly,IT WORKS!!Thought sometimes the shield did not stay right in place, it provided the best protection.Even when my baby occasionally bit my breast, there was no hurt anymore. My baby seemed to enjoy going back to skin-to-skin contact as my breastfeeding interrupted for a week.
Medela does it again! May 27, 2008 1 out of 1 found this review helpful
I am convinced that Medela is the best. Every product that I have tried with the Medela name have been top notch.
I had problems nursing my newborn and these shields helped me to continue without any problems.
I have a friend who also had a baby. Her baby had nipple confusion and I suggested the Medela shield. She is back to nursing her baby again.
Great for BF problems May 12, 2008 2 out of 2 found this review helpful
My son was five weeks early. Giving him my breastmilk was very important to me. He had a poor latch and a worse suck, so I pumped and gave him a bottle. Everyday I would try him first at my breast then give him the bottle. For six weeks I did this. It was exhausting and I was ready to give up. At my baby shower someone gave me the contact nipple shield as a gift. He was old enough to have a good suck. In three days he went from bottle to shield to breast only. It was exactly what he needed to make the transition. All that said, this should NOT be the first thing you use with your infant. A good lactation consultant will tell you to work with your healthy, term infant for good latch and suck. Giving advice such as expressing a little milk before putting baby on, so that the breast isn't so engorged that it's impossible for baby to latch; would be a great place to start. I don't believe this product was ever intended to be used as a substitute for a good latch.
Detrimental to Milk Supply March 25, 2008 2 out of 5 found this review helpful
The hospital lactation consultants really pushed this item. Know that this is detrimental to your milk supply. The baby cannot successfully compress the sinuses around the nipple if he latches on to this shield as he will suck more like he would a bottle. It took me 5 very long and frustrating weeks to wean my baby from this thing. That was time I could have spent enjoying my baby rather than fighting with him. Giving him whole, natural breast milk is extremely important to me or I would have given up and just went to formula. A friend of mine gave up on breast feeding all together when faced with the same problem. The same consultants at the same hospital pushed it on her as well.
If you have flat or inverted nipple know that you do not need an aid. Your baby knows no other nipple and will figure it out. Once the La Leche League leader in my area told me this, it gave me the strength to go for weaning my baby from it.
