The thing doesn't work September 13, 2008 Some people are having a great time with this cup, but count me among the large minority who just can't make the thing work. Once it's assembled, I myself, a grown man, can not suck anything through the straw. I can sometimes get it to let a little liquid through, with great difficulty, if I jiggle some things around a bit. But that's only if I get lucky.
Moreover, the thing is hard to assemble. The straw has to go inside a chamber in the lid, bend around a little bit, and exit a hole on the other side. But getting it to bend the right way is a matter of pure luck. You have to just close your eyes and sort of hope for the best. Half the time I end up just getting the straw bent against the inside of the chamber.
Finally, the lid has a mechanism that closes when the cup is not in use, hiding the straw and preventing leaks. The problem is, the mechanism takes considerable strength to open. It's never jammed or anything, but to open it I have to stop everything I'm doing and struggle with the thing for half a minute or so. That's not convenient.
I don't know if some of us are just getting a bad batch of cups or what, but in my experience, this cup is literally unusable.
almost perfect May 16, 2008 1 out of 1 found this review helpful
When my son started with sippy cups this was the only one he could drink from, he had never taken a bottle so he didnt get the concept of tilting the cup up to drink like you would for most sippy. Right away he took to this cup. it cleans perfectly it the dishwasher, straw and everything and absolutlely never leaked as long as in was put back together properly. I LOVED this cup... we had at least 6 of them... then one day after many falls to the floor it cracked right by the handel... a few days later it happened to another... target no longer sold them... hmm must be "back to the drawing board" I thought. well over a few months they all broke in this same manner and it was time to move on from the beloved staw cup. my son was almost 2 and able to drink from most cups anyway. ( he started with this one at around 6m) . well now my daughter is 9m and cant get the concept of other sippy cups as well... so Ive been looking for a new straw cup (to my surprise I guess they do still make them) anyway I buying more ... knowing they will eventually break... but It really is a great cup until then... the best Ive found really so I guess its almost perfect!
Good cup, bad lid May 5, 2008 I bought three of these for my kids to use. Almost immediately one of the lids cracked at a seam and the cup started to leak like crazy. I contacted Munchkin customer service and they very quickly sent me a new lid. Since then all three lids have cracked, and when I contacted customer service again, they again responded quickly and sent me three lids, this time without handles.
I have other Munchkin cupsicles that don't have the handles and those lids have never cracked or had a problem - there is just something about the design or manufacture of the handle lids that needs some work.
It smells funny December 7, 2007 0 out of 1 found this review helpful
My daughter have been exclusively breastfed so she refuses to take any bottles/cups. I decided to try this straw cup based on the reviews, but she rejects it just like she does with other cups. I also noticed that this cup somehow has a funny smell to it, someting like mint, so the water tastes funny too when using the cup. Now I have to keep looking for other cups.
Update 2/29/08: I finally found the perfect cup that my daughter is willing to take. It is Nuby No-spill Gripper Cup for less than $3. It has soft spout for babies' tender gums, built-in vavle for easy cleaning, special design allows babies to control the flow rate, very easy to suck from, light and easy for babies' small hands to hold, no leak, no spill, safe to throw around, a great great transition cup for breastfed babies. It is the only cup my baby ever took!
Great cup, a little expensive November 18, 2007 2 out of 2 found this review helpful
This cup hasn't leaked for us at all. My son will only use a straw cup, and because he was still pretty young when we needed one (7 months) it was hard to find one which met all our criteria. 1. Made from BPA Free plastics, 2. Not so tall that he couldn't drink from it if it were sitting on a tray in front of him, 3. With handles so he could hold on to it when his hands were a little slippery from eating food.
This cup met all those criteria. The handles are attached to the lid so it makes lining them up with the straw easier (other cups aren't like this). The straw has an internal valve so liquid can come out unless it's being sucked on. The lid has never leaked (and my son likes to crawl around the house, throwing the cup ahead of him.)
I don't need the insulation factor, but in the future it might be nice. The straw is a little difficult to thread through the lid, but I haven't seen a need to unthread it in the last month, as I just throw the whole lid in the dishwasher and it gets mighty clean in there.
The price is the only negative and the reason it only got 4 stars. Though I don't think it's unreasonable.
