The key feature of the Philips Avent newborn starter set bottles is the patented anti-colic nipple. It has an anti-vacuum skirt and one-way air valve that reduces air into the baby's stomach, and hence, reduces painful gas and colic. The natural shape and feel of the silicone nipple closely resembles the breast to make it easier to combine bottle and breastfeeding. The wide-neck bottles are easy to refill and clean. The cap seals the nipple to prevent leaking while mixing or traveling. The set includes two 4-oz. and three 9-oz. reusable bottles and five Avent anti-colic nipples, five dome caps, two newborn pacifiers with caps, and a bottle brush. --Scott Teal
Product Description The most natural choice for bottle feeding in a convenient set! With two sizes of bottles, two pacifiers and a bottle brush, you have everything you need to get started. The Natural Feeding Bottle promotes healthy, active feeding and is the only bottle clinically shown to reduce colic. The nipple features a built-in valve that works with baby's natural feeding rhythm so baby can control the flow of milk, which can help reduce risk of overeating and spit-up. It also keeps air out of baby's tummy, resulting in less colic and less gas after feeding. The soft, naturally shaped nipple encourages proper latch-on, making it easier for baby to switch between breast and bottle feeding. The AVENT Natural Feeding Bottle is ultra hygienic, convenient and has no small parts to clean or assemble.

Contains BPA, don't buy!! August 25, 2008 0 out of 1 found this review helpful
These bottles contain BPA, a chemical that mimics hormones and can disrupt develop, especially in infants. We had these bottles and have replaced them with glass bottles and stainless steel sippy cups. Avent pacifiers also contain BPA, steer clear of these products!!
Contains BPA -- TOXIC Substance!!!! August 11, 2008 BPA, a synthetic sex hormone that mimics estrogen, is used to make hard polycarbonate plastic. Ninety-five percent of all baby bottles on the market are made with bisphenol A. The results of the U.S. study show that, when new bottles are heated, those manufactured by Avent, Evenflo, Dr. Brown's and Disney/First Years leached between 4.7 - 8.3 parts per billion of bisphenol A.
Do your research, moms! There are lots of bottles out there that don't contain BPA. Trusted brands like Green to grow, Born Free, Adiri, and Thinkbaby.
BPA - Bad plastic July 8, 2008 Unfortunately, these bottles contain BPA that can leak into your baby's milk if you heat them. When I found out we immediately switched to Evenflo glass bottles. Otherwise I actually liked the bottles. I liked the wide opening that allows for easy cleaning. I hardly had any leaks, only sometimes when I didn't screw the lid on just right or when the nipple wasn't pulled all the way through. What I didn't like was that they are not compatible with any other breast pump except Avent breast pumps. However, Avent breast pumps never worked for me, so that was a major bummer. I think someone makes conversion kits for Avent bottles so they might fit onto a standard bottle sized breast pump. Why can't they make these in glass or at least in plastic without BPA?
LEAK! July 7, 2008 These bottles are horrible! They leak no matter how much or little you tighten the ring.
Avent system: excellent quality bottles and nipples, some concern about BPA with heating June 7, 2008 Despite the concerns about BPA we are using these bottles for our daughter, and using canned formula to supplement breastfeeding. The concern with BPA seems to be heightened when the bottles are washed with hot water, or sterilized at hot temperatures. We bought this sterilizer, but have stopped using it. However, we still use the dishwasher, which is fairly hot. I am keeping an eye on Avent's statements:

We keep using them because they seem to be really excellent bottles and nipples, she feeds easily and doesn't get a whole lot of gas. The nipples are designed so that you can graduate her to faster flow nipples as she gets bigger. We are hoping that the BPA concerns will turn out to be unwarranted.
