| Editorial Reviews:
Amazon.com Buried like a bone in a snowdrift, Balto never achieved the theatrical success it should have, but it's worth digging up. The film is structured on the true tale of a lead sled dog, Balto, that brought a diphtheria antitoxin to the small town of Nome, Alaska. The film balances comedy, villany, and drama very well and the voice work is above average. Safe family viewing, as even the villain's comeuppance manages a civilized resolution. The only problem is that the film never explains why these events in Alaska inspired New Yorkers to build a statue to the dog in Central Park. Maybe Balto eventually got mugged there. --Keith Simanton

An epic cartoon! August 4, 2008 2 out of 2 found this review helpful
Balto is one of the most emotive, epic and interesting cartoons movies I have ever seen in years.
Based on a true story happened in 1925, the film deals with the raffles a half dog and half wolf creature named Balto will have to face to reach its goal. To bring from one miles away medicines for the diphtheria, that almost makes some children of that village pass away.
Funny sequences ornament this well told story. There will an implacable enemy Steele, a beauty dog, fierce animals, hair raising sequences and of course, the snowy and windy weather.
A movie for kids and adults too. Lovable, entertained and recommended. Don't let it pass in front of you.
classic movie July 2, 2008 This is a good cartoon for the family, especially a family that lives in Alaska (which is pretty much the only place this movie was ever a big hit). Some parts are a little too silly, and obviously everything is not very historically accurate, but it has an enjoyable plot and it makes me miss my home state of Alaska, which is why I got the movie in the first place.
I see there are some quality complaints about this DVD. Ummm...this DVD version is the same exact quality that the VHS version was, they just transferred it onto DVD. What do you expect from a movie that came out in the '90's? No the movie is not as visually pleasing as the cartoons that come out today, but obviously, the original version did not come out any time recently. And no, there are not many special features, but why would there be? WHEN THIS MOVIE CAME OUT, IT ONLY CAME OUT ON VHS. THERE ARE NO SPECIAL FEATURES ON A VHS TAPE! Despite some stupid complaints from other people, I found it very easy to get over the small shortcomings of this DVD version of a classic movie that I watched when I was in middle school living in Alaska...it takes me back in time a few years, which is nice because that is what I need when I am a soldier stuck in Iraq. I am glad I bought this movie, and I suggest it to anyone who has been to or wants to go to Alaska.

I first watched this when it came out when my kids were young and decided to get it for myself. This is a great story with some historical significance. Teaches kids who watch the movie about courage, overcomming the odds, handling bullies and gives a little history. Great addition to the library.
